A Call For Change: No Diversity Without Disability

On Monday, May 23rd, we’ll meet with Lynn Murphy, a recent graduate of the University of the Arts London, where she studied MA Advertising and is currently working as an Assistant Integrated Producer at adam&eveDDB.

Lynn will be presenting a talk, ‘A Call for Change: No Diversity without Disability’. In Lynn’s words, here’s an overview of what’s to come…

“The pandemic brought many changes for all of us. One change in particular had a profound impact on me - the widespread use of face masks. Overnight, my world went silent. I hadn’t realised how much I depended on lipreading and facial cues to understand what somebody was saying until this option was taken away from me. I am deaf but was raised in a hearing environment and was fortunate to receive the best support growing up such that my disability was never something I had to think too much about. This happening opened my eyes to the reality that most people with disabilities experience, excluded from and by society. It upset me, so I started to educate myself more on this topic, and the more I learnt, the angrier I became. My MA Advertising course then enabled me to gain an insight into how the advertising industry was failing its disabled employees, which further fuelled my anger. Despite the fact that people with disabilities are the largest minority group in the world (representing 15% of the global population) the advertising industry are leaving us behind. This presentation will take you through what I learnt about how the advertising industry is currently managing its diversity and inclusion efforts for people with disabilities, the areas in which it can improve, and my suggestions for how it can do so.”
